Frequently Asked Questions
What is counselling?
Counselling provides a supportive, confidential space where you can talk openly about whatever is on your mind. It can help you understand difficult thoughts and feelings, recognise patterns and discover new ways to cope or move forward. You do not have to be in crisis for therapy to be helpful as it can support you at any stage of life.
Who do you work with?
I work with children aged 4 and above, teenagers and adults of all ages. I tailor my approach to meet you or your child where you are, recognising that each stage of life brings its own challenges.
What kind of therapy do you offer?
I offer psychotherapeutic counselling using an integrative and relational approach. This means I draw from different therapeutic models, including humanistic, person-centred and CBT and adapt them to suit your unique needs, background and goals. My work is always trauma-informed and collaborative.
How long does therapy last?
I usually work with clients long term but can offer shorter-term therapy depending on your needs and when I have availability. Together, we’ll find the right approach and length of therapy to suit you.
How often are sessions?
Sessions are usually weekly at the same time each week. This regular rhythm supports the therapeutic process. If you have particular scheduling needs, we can talk about what’s manageable for you.
Do you offer in-person or online sessions?
I offer in-person therapy from a private, comfortable space in Cramlington Village Surgery. I may offer online sessions for adults depending on your needs. Feel free to ask if that’s something you’re interested in.
How much does it cost?
Sessions are £60 and last 50 minutes.
Is what I say in counselling kept confidential?
Yes, what you share in therapy is confidential. There are some exceptions for safety and safeguarding reasons, which I will explain clearly before we begin any work together.
How do I book a session?
You can get in touch via email, phone, text or WhatsApp. I’ll respond as soon as I can and we’ll arrange an initial consultation to explore whether therapy feels like the right fit.
Do I need a referral from a GP?
No, you don’t need a referral; you can contact me directly to arrange sessions.
What if I don’t know what’s wrong - can I still come to therapy?
Yes, absolutely. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Sometimes people come to counselling simply because something doesn’t feel right and exploring that together can be a really valuable starting point.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. I’ll ask a few questions
about what has brought you to therapy and what you’re hoping to achieve. You’re welcome to
ask questions too.
For children, the first session is with parents only where possible. This allows us to discuss
your child’s needs and how best to support them. All following sessions will be with the child
alone.
For young people, the first session is also with parents only where possible. The young person
is welcome to attend if they feel strongly about it, ideally joining for part of the session
rather than the whole. All following sessions will be with the young person alone. This helps
us understand everyone’s perspective and establish how therapy can best support the young person.
Do I get updates on my child's progress?
Sessions with children and young people are confidential, unless there is a safeguarding concern. Parent reviews are available and offer an opportunity to discuss how things are progressing in a general way. However, your child’s privacy and the principles of confidentiality will always be respected.
Can I bring someone with me?
Sessions are confidential for everyone, so for adults it’s just you in the room. For children and young people, parents or carers join the first session only, as mentioned earlier. This helps create a safe and trusting space for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.
What if I have specific needs or preferences?
I want therapy to feel comfortable and accessible for everyone. If you have any communication preferences, such as email, phone or text, just let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate them. If there is anything that would help you feel more comfortable or supported such as sensory needs, identity related considerations or ways of working that suit you best, please feel free to share. We will create a space that feels safe and respectful for you.
Do you offer group therapy?
Group therapy will be available soon. If you think this might be helpful for you, feel free to get in touch. I’m happy to keep you updated about future group therapy sessions.
What if I need to cancel a session?
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations with less notice may be charged in full. I’ll go through my cancellation policy with you before we begin.
Is the counselling room accessible?
Yes, sessions take place in a GP surgery with step-free access and a lift to all floors. There are accessible patient toilets available. Please note there is no on-site parking, but free parking is available for up to 4 hours at Manor Walks, just a short walk away.
What happens to my information? (Privacy & Data Protection)
I take your privacy seriously. I'm registered with the ICO and fully compliant with GDPR. All client data is handled securely and confidentially, in line with professional and legal standards. You’ll receive full details about how your information is stored and used before we begin working together.
